The history of BMW as a manufacturer of road vehicles started with the construction of motorcycles.  Starting in 1923 with the R32, this reached a temporary high point in 1937 when Ernst Henne set the world speed record of 279.5 km/h on a BMW motorcycle.  The record stood unbroken for 14 years.

Today, the various BMW motorcycles are exclusively made at the Berlin-Spandau plant—a move that started way back in 1969.  Ever since the launch of the next generation Boxer engines in 1993, the Berlin-Spandau plant has been refurbished to become one of the most modern motorcycle plants in Europe.  The plant employs 2,847 employees and produces 400 motorcycles per day.
