The history of BMW as a manufacturer of road vehicles started with the construction of motorcycles. Starting in 1923 with the R32, this reached a temporary high point in 1937 when Ernst Henne set the world speed record of 279.5 km/h on a BMW motorcycle. The record stood unbroken for 14 years. Today, the various BMW motorcycles are exclusively made at the Berlin-Spandau plant—a move that started way back in 1969. Ever since the launch of the next generation Boxer engines in 1993, the Berlin-Spandau plant has been refurbished to become one of the most modern motorcycle plants in Europe. The plant employs 2,847 employees and produces 400 motorcycles per day. BMW Motorrad Price List (April 2003)
