In simple ceremonies held in Davao City last January 30, three leading Mindanao firms – Davao Light and Power Company, Sumifru Philippines Corporation, and Paglas Corporation – signed a memorandum of agreement signifying their participation in Motolite’s Balik-Baterya Program.

Davao Light and Power Company turned over 570-kg of used lead acid batteries (ULABS), while Sumifru Philippines Corporation also turned over 2,475-kg of ULABS as a donation to the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).  Funds generated will be used to finance various corporate social responsibility projects.

Part of the maiden activity for Motolite’s information campaign in Mindanao is to promote environmental awareness and proper disposal and recycling of used batteries, the event included participants from Earthsavers, Ateneo de Davao University, John Paul II College of Davao, DTI-Davao, and 22 other companies.  The event was organized by the Corporate Social Responsibility Department of Oriental & Motolite Corporation in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).

As the industry leader in automotive batteries, Motolite has been at the forefront of community-based environmental and health campaigns through its Balik-Baterya initiative which encourages the public to return used lead acid batteries (ULABs) for safe disposal and proper recycling. By collecting the ULABs for proper recycling and use in the production of new batteries, Motolite contributes to the effort to rid the environment of hazardous wastes.

When batteries are indiscriminately disposed of at the end of their useful life, the toxic materials inside may spill into the ground, into our water systems, or released as dust particles in the air.  These can contaminate the water and the air, be ingested or inhaled, and can cause serious health problems. Despite the obvious hazards, however, an estimated 20% of ULABs go to junkers and illegitimate recyclers who do not observe proper disposal methods and recycling process.

The Balik-Baterya Program accepts all types and brands of lead acid batteries from car, truck, motorcycle, boat, forklift, rechargeable lamp, generator, aircrafts, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS).  For more details, contact the Balik Baterya Hotlines at (02) 415-1621, 370-1020 and 370-1022.
