Optional features on the Flex include a full-sized "Vista Roof" giving each row of occupants their own skylight. And then there's a highly advanced navigation system with next-generation audio technology. Incorporating the Flex's climate control system, the optional navigation system has voice recognition technology and commands maybe inputted through an 8-inch touch-screen display. The audio system accommodates an AM/FM stereo, SIRIUS satellite radio, a 6-disc CD/DVD/MP3 player as well as a built-in hard drive system for 150 hours of songs. Powering the Flex is only one single engine: the 260 horsepower 3.5-liter V6. Mated to a 6-speed automatic, it promises good fuel economy as well as excellent performance. All-wheel drive is standard. In the Flex, it's an on-demand system that transfers torque from front to rear (up to 100 percent). Underneath, the Flex has all around independent suspension as well as extra-thick sound deadening materials to lessen road, wide and tire noise. The extra-stiff body structure of the Flex is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to its safety features. In addition to this, the Flex features AdvanceTrac stability control system with RSC or Roll Stability Control; Personal Safety System (multiple airbags and pre-tensioner seatbelts for all occupants); Safety Canopy side curtain airbags; Belt Minder and a rear back-up camera. Even re-fueling the Flex is much safer with the capless fuel filler system. The Ford Flex was recently introduced at the New York International Auto Show with a showroom launch by around the summer of 2008. According to Ford, the Flex will defy the direction of the crossover vehicle as the market transitions to this new market segment from the SUVs of the 1990's and the minivans of the 1980's. With the Ford's crossover vehicle sales up 40 percent from last year, the future looks bright for the struggling American car maker. |
